About the Vessel

TOOLS TO ACHIEVE YOUR MOVEMENT DREAMS

The Vessel Intensive is a unique opportunity for those seeking a profound, in-depth learning experience. The intensive gives time to transfer your movement into different realms, providing a journey unlike any other.

The Vessel provides you with practical information, creative tools and exercises to navigate your personal path.

We will work with the technical  — physical/emotional  — creative. Each aspect flowing into each other.

In the technical blocks we will work on techniques and knowledge on how to relate through movement and refine our skills in partnering and contact - finding softness and flow in the body. Gain understanding of how to let levitation happen rather than forcing it.

The physical/emotional blocks bring us back to our source, the present moment. This is a site-specific exploration where movement is shaped by the spaces we inhabit — every room, every surface, every shift in the environment becomes part of the work.

Lastly the in the expression blocks playing with collective improvisation we transcend the physicality of our bodies. The judgement of the ego can drop to encounter a place that holds all of lifes experience - the weird, the ugly, the beautiful wildness. We will stay in a constant process of self-questioning about how our bodies communicate. The free explorations will connect the dots and allow yourself to encounter full self-expression. Be ready to surprise yourself. Let go of any limitations and create something beyond yourself.

Some of the sessions are planned for outside (depending on the weather).

What to expect:

  • Different Rooms — Different Moves: Adapt and respond to the unique qualities of each space.
  • Outdoor Partnering/Contact Training: Explore physical connection and trust in nature’s unpredictable terrain.
  • Improvisation Techniques: Develop spontaneity, break habits, and discover new movement pathways.
  • Group Journeys: Experience the power of collective movement and shared momentum.
  • Sound, Voice & Physical Theatre: Integrate voice and sound into your physical expression.
  • Altered States of Consciousness: Use music and movement to access deeper layers of awareness and creativity.

Personalized Practice:
This retreat goes beyond structured sessions. I’ll be there throughout — offering one-on-one feedback, tailored exercises, and practical tips during open practice times to help you refine your skills and push your boundaries.

Collaborative Creation:
We conclude with Working Groups — small teams developing original movement pieces, combining personal expression with group dynamics.

This retreat is for movers ready to engage fully — physically, creatively, and collaboratively.

My body tingles and the corners of my mouth turn upwards when I think about these days. So much happened and I feel like I've become someone else again. I haven't had such an intense group experience for a very long time and I feel reminded of teenage times when many things were the first time. Elke is a very dedicated and attentive teacher. I felt safe throughout the days, even though I was often challenged out of my comfort zone. All the sessions were very well prepared, with enough but not too many precise instructions. I learned about partnering techniques and had the chance to deepen body knowledge that was already there from the classes. I got a lot of creative inspiration. The music was gorgeous and I had the impression that we were in contact with this big old house, the lake, the animals, the moist nature of early autumn. There was a beautiful group energy and I got to know people I am looking forwards to meet in the classes. I felt quite high sometimes although i didnt drink alcohol etc. in the whole weekend. The food was incredibly tasty and varied. It's hard to describe, but I have the feeling that something has changed in me and in all of us. It was a truly intensive experience!

“How to describe a dance+ experience with words? As I knew Elkes classes I knew, this retreat ain’t a trip. It’s a journey. Not just a journey that bears you from one point to another. A Journey that makes things themselves become different.

As an invitation to leave my comfort zones, It became a time and space bender. Creating fissures with enough room to discover the subliminal, zooming in to the microcosms of visible and invisible objects and movements. Sharpening dreams while blurring reality.

The vessel equipped me with new tools, body language and shapeshifts, as well as time and multiple sessions to integrate them. Question movement routines and dynamics. Find new ones. Not letting me settle for the merely safe, but find the beauty in the increased uncertainty of the dancefloor.

Also I really love the audio experience. The weird sounds as well as the soundscapes. That are never cliche  or  too predeterming a certain movement. But helped me float on pure pleasure or sink in down the rabbit hole.

And after all I just had a lasting real good quality time.”

I didn't expect it to have such an impact on me at so many levels and to come back to Berlin so much grown inside.

A big surprise for me was the group dynamics outside the classes. It was really nice to spend time with the participants and get to know them better. The retreat showed me again how diverse and interesting people can be. Here, I was reminded of your words, Elke, that one shouldn't just focus on oneself, but also on the group and group dynamics.

I found the combination of writing and movement really great because it allowed me to better understand what had just happened. You could observe and describe it for a moment longer than in dance where it disappears quickly. You could not only be present in the moment of realization but also perceive it, stay in the moment, hold onto it, reflect on it. I really liked that we were supposed to read our own texts. It was initially challenging because I had never read my own texts before, but I really enjoyed it. The reading - spotlight effect - had a really strong therapeutic effect. The fact that everyone had to do it was crucial. Otherwise, I would have had the feeling that we had to compete for who gets to read their text, i.e. who is more extroverted. I had another moment of this kind at the end of the retreat when we shared our experiences - I am very grateful for these solo spotlight moments.

Surrounded by nature at the Edge of the Harz

In the small village of Veckenstedt, near the Harz Mountains, the retreat takes place in a quiet, rural setting which is surrounded by fields, forest edges, and open land. There is space here. Fewer distractions. A different pace.

We work inside the Kunstmühle Veckenstedt, a former mill from 1884. The building is old, textured, and carries its history. It hasn’t been polished away. It holds weight, roughness, and character.
